Recently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in New Delhi has implemented strict measures targeted at industries operating in "non-conforming areas". As part of a crackdown, 84 complexes were sealed, and electricity and water supply were cut off at seven locations. These non-conforming areas are those where industries operate without proper authorization. There are a total of 26 such locations, with around 70% of the area being used for industrial purposes. Some areas classified as non-conforming include Khyala, Peeragarhi, Mundka, Hastsal, and Anand Parbat.
To enhance the city's economy, create employment opportunities, and support industrial units, the Delhi government is working on redeveloping several of these areas. In August and September, MCD teams inspected 520 units in non-conforming areas to ensure regulatory compliance. Licensing officers also inspected 215 factories in conforming areas, revealing that 43 factories were operating without the required permits.
Upon receiving notices, 31 factories applied for licenses while the remaining units faced disconnection of power and water supply by MCD after failing to respond within three days or apply for licenses. MCD officials noted that a campaign has been initiated to verify the status of units that were shifted from residential to industrial zones following the MC Mehta vs. Union of India case.
